Giannis Antetokounmpo’s life is the focus of a new documentary from Prime Video Sports, where the 29-year-old Milwaukee Bucks star reveals that he nearly stepped away from basketball after his father, Charles Antetokounmpo, passed away in 2017.
In the initial trailer for Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, exclusively shared with PEOPLE, Giannis and his family discuss the profound impact of their tragic loss.
“I said, ‘I don’t want to play anymore,'” Giannis states in the trailer, to which his fiancée, Mariah Riddlesprigger, responds, “I thought he was finished.”
Charles diеd unexpectedly of a heart attack in Milwaukee at the age of 54, just three years into Giannis’s NBA career.
However, rather than leaving the sport he cherishes, Giannis went on to establish himself as one of the world’s greatest basketball players after his father’s passing.
“We’re all going to diе one day, so go conquer the world,” Giannis expresses in the trailer.
The Prime Video documentary chronicles Giannis’s journey from a challenging childhood in Greece as the son of Nigerian immigrants to the pinnacle of basketball, starting with his parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, who left Nigeria seeking a better life for their children when Giannis and his brothers were young.
Veronica shares that she and her husband “left Nigeria in search of a better life” for their family, but their experience in Greece brought its own difficulties.
Giannis’s brothers, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, mention that they lived “in fear” as immigrants in Greece, describing how Giannis was “always trying to protect” them.
“You want the best for your brothers,” Giannis tearfully admits in the trailer. “I’m just a hard worker trying to survive,” he continues, “because I fear losing all of this.”
Before he even aspired to play professionally, Giannis and his brothers would often visit a local internet café in Greece, where they saw highlights of NBA stars like Kevin Durant and LeBron James, against whom he would later compete in the league.
His brother, Thanasis, also plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.
In 2021, Giannis led the Bucks to an NBA championship, solidifying his legacy as one of the all-time greats in basketball.
“The difference between a coward and a hero…is how you confront fear,” Giannis states in the trailer.
The Prime Video Sports film, produced by Words + Pictures and directed by Kristen Lappas, marks the first time Giannis’s family has shared their personal accounts of their journey.
The documentary includes interviews with former and current NBA stars such as Jason Kidd, Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday, Kenny Smith, Vin Baker, and Ernie Johnson.
