Earlier, Alicia Keys became the first female host of the Grammy Awards in 14 years. She told Billboard magazine that she’s aiming to create a “lovefest” for musicians and industry professionals at this ceremony.
Discussing her vision for the 2020 Grammys, Keys explained, “I wаnted to create this lovefest where we could celebrate each other’s greatness and just have fun.” She added that in today’s chaotic world, everyone needs a bit of celebration and to feel like they’re among friends, with people who genuinely care.
Keys wanted to make Grammy history as the first female recording artist to host the prestigious music awards show more than once. For inspiration, she shared with Billboard that she’s drawing from classic variety shows like those of Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin, where music, comedy, and artistry intertwined seamlessly.
“Nobody does that anymore,” Keys noted. “They had this cool mixture of musician and artist and comedian, so it mixed all of these worlds together… while they’re holding, like, a whiskey. I want to see how to modernize that.”
The Recording Academy announced her return as host and Keys mentioned that she didn’t hesitate when asked to host again. “Last year was such a powerful experience for me,” she stated, recalling the love she felt in the room and from audiences worldwide. She said it reinforced her belief in the healing and unifying power of music.
