Victor Wembanyama being taller than everyone he’s playing with or against in a basketball game is nothing new, but Tuesday’s Olympic showdown between France and Japan offered a different perspective than fans are accustomed to seeing.
The game pit Wembanyama—the tallest basketball player at the 2024 Games—against the shortest when he squared off with 5’6″ Yuki Togashi.
Togashi has spent most of his professional career in Japan, but he did have a stint in what was then known as the NBA Developmental League during the 2014-15 season. He was a second-round pick in the 2014 D-League draft.
An ankle injury ended Togashi’s season after just 25 games. He averaged 2.0 points and 1.0 assists for the Texas Legends.
Togashi returned to Japan starting with the 2015-16 season as a member of the Chiba Jets. He has continued to play for the club, winning B. League MVP in 2019 and East Asia Super League Final MVP in 2024.
This marks the second Olympic appearance for Togashi. He was on Japan’s team three years ago for the Tokyo Games.
Wembanyama is making his first Olympic appearance. The 20-year-old had a historic rookie season for the San Antonio Spurs. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and an NBA-high 3.6 blocks per game in 71 starts to earn Rookie of the Year honors.
The French superstar finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Despite the viral image showing the height disparity between Togashi and Wembanyama, the game sadly did not offer a one-on-one moment involving the two players going at each other with one having the ball.
