Manchester United Appoints Omar Berrada as New CEO, Crossing Rivalry Divide from Manchester City
Manchester United has announced the appointment of Omar Berrada as the club’s new chief executive, marking a significant move from rivals Manchester City. Berrada, who previously served as City’s chief football operations officer, has resigned from his position to take up the role at Old Trafford.
The 46-year-old’s appointment is linked to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS team, which has acquired a 25% stake in the club. This marks the first major appointment under the Ratcliffe regime following the partial takeover deal, where INEOS will oversee Manchester United’s football operations.
In a club statement, Manchester United expressed the determination to prioritize football and on-field performance. Omar’s appointment is seen as the initial step towards achieving this goal and re-establishing the club as a title-winning force.
Berrada, succeeding Richard Arnold who departed in December, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Born in Paris and raised in Morocco, he entered football in 2004 by joining Barcelona. Berrada initially planned an engineering career but dropped out of university after six months, later enrolling at the EU Business School due to his ambition to travel to Europe.
Having worked with Barcelona for eight years, he joined Manchester City in 2011, playing a key role in sponsorship negotiations and global brand deals. Berrada, fluent in six languages, has been recognized for his commercial acumen, helping City secure lucrative partnerships.
In 2016, he became Manchester City’s chief operating officer and later took on the same role for the entire City Football Group, overseeing around 11 clubs across five continents. His involvement in securing major deals, including the move to bring Erling Haaland to Manchester City, showcases his significant impact in the football business.
Berrada’s extensive experience in the sponsorship sector is seen as crucial for Manchester United’s commercial growth. His dynamic leadership is expected to contribute to the club’s ambitions on and off the field, aligning with the vision of putting football back at the heart of the club’s operations.
