Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool captain, has completed an u𝚗expecтed move to the Dutch powerhouse Ajax, putting an end to his challenging stint in Saudi Arabia.
On Thursday night, January 18, the 33-year-old announced his departure from Al-Ettifaq, a team in the Saudi Pro League, through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He expressed regret about the decision, citing considerations for his family. Henderson acknowledged the support from the club and fans, expressing gratitude for the unwavering backing since his arrival.
Following Henderson’s statement, Ajax officially confirmed the transfer, stating, “Ajax and Jordan Henderson have reached an agreement on Henderson’s transfer to Amsterdam. The midfielder spent the previous six months at Al-Ettifaq. The 81-cap English international player recently decided to end his relationship with the Saudi Arabian club.”
Returning to Europe after just six months in the Middle East, Henderson’s decision was influenced by disappointing on-field experiences and dissatisfaction with his family’s new lifestyle. The Liverpool legend signed an 18-month contract with an additional year’s option.
Joining a resurgent Ajax team that hasn’t suffered a defeat since October, Henderson brings valuable experience and leadership qualities. Interim manager John van ‘t Schip expressed excitement about the addition, stating, “We wa𝚗тed an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities. We needed someone to come in right away, in part because of injuries on the team. And Jordan Henderson is one of those players. His arrival will greatly improve our team.”
As Henderson becomes eligible for Ajax’s Europa Conference League campaign, the team is set to face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the knockout round playoffs next month.
